Here is the link I mentioned in class. National Public Radio is a great resource for a diverse and eclectic collection of music to hear. Your assignment is to listen to the five pieces of music presented in this link and comment on them right here on this blog. As you listen to the five pieces of music, see if you can find and feel the 5/4 beat.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94979223
When you listened, which piece of music was the easiest to hear the 5/4 beat? Which was the most difficult? What in the music made them easy or difficult to distinguish?

Easiest to recognize was Do what you like or Mikrokosmos. Hardest was River man.

Don't forget to include why it was easy or difficult to hear the 5/4 pattern. Describe what you heard. MM
the easiest was river man, and the hardest was english roundabout. river man was easy because i could hear the note changes every 5 beats. i almost couldn't find the 5/4 beat in english roundabout.
EH
the easiest were mixolydian or do what you like. you could count the notes along with the 5 beats. the hardest was probably countdown. for some reason i couldn't get it right.
MN
I think River man was the easiest to recognize because the sort of swing of the guitar made it easy for me and i thought In Mixolydian Mode was the hardest because im not good at piano listening. And for me listening and recognizing piano beats is hard for some reason.
TSH
The easiet to here was English Roundabout because it had a very steady beat that was easy to recognize from the beginning. The most difficult was Countdown because the drums in the beginning did not sound like they had a steady beat and was difficult to distinguish their beat. The change of keys in English Roundabout helped me betermine the 5/4 pattern.

I thought that river man was fairly easy to follow when i was counting but the most difficult to me would be the english roundabout because i had difficulty keeping and finding the beat
AJ
I thought one of the easiest to identify as 5/4 time was the song countdown, dave brubeck. The hardest one to recogonize was the song, In myxlidian mode. I dont know why it just was. maybe because there wasn't a beat behind it, or something.
Dan B.
I think that In Mixolydian Mod No 48 was by far the easiest song to find the 5/4 beat because it has a very clear beat with the piano at 5 beats a measure, the most difficult for me to figure out was Countdown mostly due to the huge contrast of the percussion instrument and piano in the beginning, once i realized the bass started, it became a bit easier.

I thought the easiest to recognize was river man because the beat was easy to follow. I thought that english roundabout was the most difficult because i was unable to follow the beat throughout the song.

The mixolydian mode song was really easy because the notes repeated along with the 5/4 beat. The Countdown one was hard at the beginning but when the bass came in it was easy.River Man was easy too.
CC
The easiest piece to here the 5/4 beat in was In Mixolydian Mode ( No. 48), probably because it was an incredibly simple melody (and it was only about 50 seconds long). The hardest one was Countdown; I didn't even here the beat until about a minute and a half into the piece.
Colin
i thought the easiest song to recognize the 5/4 beat was the mixolydian mode because i could hear the piano beat very well. the river man was hard for me because i couldn't hear the guitar beat very well.
JM
the easiest was the river man because i could hear the 5 beats the easiest. In the english roundabout i could barely tell that it even was a five beats i only knew cause it said so. the others were not easy but they werent as hard as the roundabout.
BT
The easiest to recognize that was in 5/4 was Do What You Like because of the loud drum line the hardest was River man because i could not hear the drums
KA
I think the hardest one to listen to is the Countdown because the beat changes as the song progresses. In addition, the easiest one to identify 5/4 was River Man because i hear the beat change every 5 beats. It was easy to identify the music because some of the song has a repeated pattern. The most difficult to identify was when the song didnt have any lyrics and when it changes throughout the song.
NN
All these songs were good but weren't really something i would listen to. The easiest one to recognize that was in 5/4 was
Dave Brubeck's Countdown.
-JKS
The hardest to recognize was either Cowntdown or River Man. The easiest was Mixolydian, and the next easiest was English Roundabout. I could tell that there was 5/4 in Do what you like, but I couldn't keep the beat.
JB
I think that either English Roundabout or Do What You Like was the easiest song to hear a 5/4 beat in because of the drums and repeated melodies. River Man was the most difficult for me because there seemed to be very little instrumental melody to follow.
-MNick
The piece that was easiest to hear the 5/4 beat for me was "English Roundabout". This was because of its strong and heavy hitting bass line. The bass line seemed to always strongly hit the 1 beat as in 1 2 3 4 5. The piece that was most difficult for me to recognize is was "Countdown". I was confused by the switching off of the bass drum to the piano. It seemed to really throw me off. I finally however heard the 5/4 when the bass guitar and drums came in.
BH
i think the most difficult song to hear the 5/4 pattern was Countdown. i think the combination of the drums and the piano was throwing me off. I thought the easiest was do what you like. i think the simple repetition of the instrument made it easy
rdh
The easiest for me to hear in 5/4 was River Man, because it had an easilly identified beat in the background. English Roundabout was hard to tell though because it was hard to find the beat to it.
JPR
I thought the easiest song to recognize the 5/4 signature in was "Take 5." I think it was because the swing rythem highlights the contrast between the the piano and the horns. I think the hardest was Countdown, as the introduction section was a bit off-putting.
L.B.
Mikrokosmos was the easiest to recognize because I just had to count the notes played since it's a simple tune. The hardest was river man because I couldn't hear any underlying beat.
LVC
I agree with the overall consensus- Riverman was extremely easy to recognize because of the consistency, but none of them were really all that difficult
